Note: One of chief cities of Assyria; site of sanctuary of Ishtar. It was a center of communication in the Assyrian Empire. The site of the defeat of Darius III by Alexander the Great. It became a Christian center in early 4th century; was superseded by Al-Mawṣil in 13th century. It's central citadel area is noted as one of the oldest continuously inhabited sites in the world. |
