Note: Tipperary South Riding is one of two sectors of County Tipperary in the southwestern province of Munster in Ireland. It was once part of the ancient kingdom of Thomond. In 1185, Prince John, regent of England, gave this area to Philip de Worcester, whose family by 1328 had lost status to the earls of Ormond, the holders of Tipperary North Riding. Much of the region's industry is based on processing agricultural products. The main urban areas are Clonmel, Carrick-on-Suir, Cashel, and Tipperary, with the riding council meeting at Clonmel. The 2003 estimated population was 79,800. |
