Note: Tipperary North Riding is one of two sectors of County Tipperary in the southwestern province of Munster in Ireland. It was once part of the ancient kingdom of Thomond. In 1185, Prince John, regent of England, gave this area to Theobald Walter, who founded the Butler family, which, as holders of the earldom of Ormond, were highly prominent in Irish politics throughout medieval times. Much of the region's industry is based on processing agricultural products. The main urban areas are Nenagh, Templemore, and Thurles, with the riding council meeting at Nenagh. The 2003 estimated population was 61,600. |
