Note: Ancient Phoenician and Roman town at the head of the Bay of Gibraltar in Spain. Started as an Iberian settlement; colonized by Greeks; occupied by Romans from 206 BCE; was sacked by Scipio Africanus the Younger, and resettled by illegitimate descendants of Roman legionaries and Spanish women; was haven for Pompey after his defeat in 45 BCE. The nearby Torre de Cartagena was constructed from stones taken from the ruins of this site.
