Note: Bremen is an area of about 2000 square miles, lying between the lower Elbe and the lower Weser Rivers in Lower Saxony in northern Germany. It was a powerful duchy and archbishopric during the Middle Ages and Renaissance. In 1715 it had become part of the electorate of Hanover.
