Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Pauma Band of Luiseño Indians, one of the six bands of Luiseño peoples located throughout the mid-Southern California area. The reservation spans four separate tracts of land totaling approximately 5,877 acres near the foothills of Mount Palomar in San Diego County, California. 225 acres serve as the reservation's residential area and comprise the largest original reservation tract. The Luiseño Tribe, from which the Pauma Band descend, traditionally inhabited terrtory extending along the coast from present-day San Juan Capistrano in the north to Encinitas/Carlsbad in the south and Mount Palomar to the east; the tribe's ancestral lands span present-day Orange, San Diego, and Riverside Counties near the San Luis Rey River in the Pauma valley. Upon European settlement in the mid- to late-1700s, however, many Pauma people were forced to work as laborers for the newly built Mission San Luis Rey and later relocated to either the Sherman Indian School in Riverside, CA or Rancho Pauma. The Pauma Band was not granted a federal reservation of its own until the late-1890s. After reservation lands were set aside for the Pauma Band in 1891, an Executive Order dated 1892-1893 was later passed formally establishing the Pauma-Yuima Reservation. The reservation trust lands were enlarged in 1973, when the Bureau of Land Management issued a trust patent to the Pauma Band for 5,627 additional acres of land from the nearby Mission Reserve; this large addition brings the reservation to its current acreage. Since the passage of the Indian Claims Commission Act of 1946, the Pauma Band has been fighting for self-determination and to reclaim traditional lands unjustly lost to settler colonialism. |
