Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Ohkay Owingeh, a federally-recognized tribal entity of the same name. The reservation spans approximately 12,237 acres along the Rio Grande in Rio Arriba County, New Mexico. The tribe has occupied the reservation site for at least 700 years, but increasing settler encroachment led to the Spanish establishing their first capital on the land in 1598. The original Spanish land grant establishing this reservation, then called San Juan Pueblo, was later confirmed in 1689. The United States upheld the reservation land grant in 1858 and patened the grant in 1864. The tribe changed its name back to its original name, Ohkay Owingeh, in 2005. |
