Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Hopi Tribe. The reservation spans over 1.5 million acres of dry land in Navajo and Coconino Counties, Arizona. It is comprised of 12 self-governing villages on three mesas, each sharing common interests and jointly working for the welfare of the Hopi tribal entity. The villages include Kykotsmovi, the seat of the Hopi Tribal Government, and Oraibi, the oldest continously inhabited village in the United States. The reservation is bounded on all sides by the Navajo Nation Reservation due to the long history of land disputes between the Hopi and Navajo peoples. Though the Hopi Tribe has resided in northeastern Arizona since the 12th century, their reservation was not formally established until December 16, 1882. However, Navajo settlement and conflicting land disputes prevented the Hopi Tribe from enjoying full access to the 2.6 million acres alloted to them by the federal government. After years of escalating land conflict between the two peoples, the Navajo-Hopi Settlement Act of 1974 split land across tribes and created a partition line that solidified the reservation's current boundaries.
