Note: Located on Thames Estuary, Southend-on-Sea is the nearest seaside resort to London. Its pier (1 1/2 miles long) is the world's largest. In the early 19th century, it was popularized by Princess Caroline and Princess Charlotte of Wales. Recently, the city has attracted light industry.
