Note: The town of Litomyšl was originally a hillfort built on a trade route linking Bohemia and Moravia. It was a thriving medieval center and continued to be a significant trade center for centuries. Its major historic structure is a Renaissance chateau with more than 8,000 original sgrafittos. It has a Gothic town hall and many Renaissance and Baroque houses in the central square, with the 16th-century House At the Knights currently housing an art gallery. The town also boasts the Portmoneum, a museum with wall paintings and furniture carved by the eccentric Czech artist Josef Váchal. The town is the birthplace of the Czech composer Bedrich Smetana, and is the home of the Museum of Czech Music. The 2003 estimated population was 10,400.
