Note: The town of Jičín is located 65 miles northeast of Prague in the Czech Republic. It was founded by King Wenceslaus II in 1302 and was originally built entirely of wood. Albrecht from Valdstejn rebuilt the town in stone at the beginning of the 17th century. He built an early Baroque chateau, a summerhouse with loggia, a church, and a complex of Jesuit's buildings designed by an Italian architect. A great fire in 1765 lead to the rebuilding of much of the town, particularly of the chateau, in the Classical style. The Valdicka Gate remains the town's most notable historic structure. In 1813, Francis I of Austria signed a treaty here joining the alliance against Napoleon. It is also the site where Prussia defeated Austria in 1866. The 2003 estimated population was 16,500.
