Note: First settled by hunters and herders; traded with Europe by 4th century BCE; occupied in medieval times by Ṣanhajāh Berbers, later by Arabic-speaking Muslim Bedouins; Spanish arrived 1476, ruled from 19th century; now primarily occupied by Morocco (Al-Magreb) with the exception of a small strip of land. Considered a "disputed territory," and classified by the UN as a "non-self-governing territory," with the claimants being Morocco and the partially recognized Sahrawi Arab Democratic Republic and their liberation movement known as the Polisario Front.
