Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Mohegan Tribe. The reservation spans approximately 409 acres held in federal trust, located on the Thames River in the village of Uncasville, Connecticut. The reservation specifically lies within New London County, Connecticut. The Mohegan Tribe migrated to and inhabited 2,700 acres in Connecticut prior to European contact; the tribe was recognized as a sovereign tribal entity pursuant to the Treaty of Hartford in 1638. However, the original Mohegan Tribe land base was terminated beginning in 1861. By 1872, the Mohegan land, encompassing various tribal historical sites, was divided into taxable parcels. The current reservation was established in 1994-1995, resulting from decades of law suits and advocacy initiated by tribal members to reclaim land lost in 1861. |
