Note: Lower Shawneetown was founded in the mid 1720-1730s by a confederation of Shawnee, Haudenosaunee, Lenape, and other Native communities fleeing settler incursions farther east; it was built upon an older Fort Ancient culture mound site. Lower Shawneetown became a major meeting place and diplomatic hub for Native and non-Natives alike. A major flood led to Lower Shawneetown being moved further up the Scioto River to a location in Ohio.
