Hierarchy of Guilá Naquitz (abandoned dwelling)  Guilá Naquitz (abandoned dwelling)

Note: Located within the eastern range of mountains in the valley of Oaxaca, the site was occupied by hunters and gatherers for some time. It also contains very early evidence for the shift from gathering to active food production in Mesoamerica; several squash seeds that are larger than those from wild squashes indicate that domestication was occurring. One of the largest of these seeds has been directly dated to 10,000 before present, making it among the oldest evidence for a domesticated plant in the Americas. Local experimentation with foxtail grass seems to have resulted in a failed domestication attempt.
