Note: Calvor was one of the pilgrimage sites on route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, home of the shrine dedicated to Saint James, the patron saint of Spain. The symbol of Saint James, the scalloped shell, became the primary symbol representing pilgrims. Most construction of pilgrimage routes in Spain began by the end of the 10th century. The Church of San Esteban in Calvor is believed to occupy the territory of the former monastery dedicated to both Saint Paul and Saint Stephen.
