Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Muckleshoot Indian Tribe. The reservation spans 6.128 square miles (over 3,921 acres) between the White and Green Rivers southeast of the city of Auburn in King and Pierce Counties, Washington. Though the Muckeshoot Indian Tribe inhabited the Duwamish and Upper Puyallup watersheds of Central Puget Sound in Washington for thousands of years prior to European settlement, it was not granted a federal reservation until 1857. The reservation was further enalrged by an Executive Order dated 1874. However, much of this land was taken away from the tribe through allotment beginning in 1934 and, by 1974, the tribe held only a single acre of their reservation. Since 1994, the tribe has been able to repurchase a large portion of their original 1857 reservation. |
