Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa, one of six Ojibwe members of the larger Minnesota Chippewa Tribe. The reservation spans over 100,000 acres in Koochiching, Itasca, and St. Louis Counties, Minnesota; it encompasses three sections, the largest of which is at Nett Lake. The reservation also includes the Vermillion Reservation on Lake Vermillion and the Deer Creek Reservation. After relocating from the east coast up the Saint Lawrence River and around the Great Lakes, the Bois Forte Band of Chippewa settled in northern Minnesota, where they lived for centuries prior to European contact. When colonial settlement intensified in the region, the Bois Forte Band signed a series of federal treaties in the 1700s and 1800s. Specifically, the La Pointe Treaty in 1854 gave the Bois Forte Band the right to choose reservation lands in the vicinity of Lake Vermillion in exchange for the ceeding of much of their traditional lands. However, after reports of gold in northeastern Minnesota spread, the Band signed the Treaty of 1866, which relinquished reservation claims pursuant to the 1854 Treaty and, instead, established the current Bois Forte Reservation. Reservation boundaries were further solidified by an Executive Order dated 1881. Despite the establishment of the reservation, the Bois Forte Band have been deprived of tens of thousands of acres they had been promised in the Treaty of 1854.
