Note: Was a large oasis center of the Kara-Kum desert on the ancient Silk Road, presently located 19 miles east of modern town Mary. It is noted as being a hub for Hindu, Parsi, and Arab traditions. Merv was a great Arab (from 651) and Turk (from 1118) cultural center. It was destroyed by Mongols in the 13th century and again ruined in 1793. Designated a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1999.
