Note: The town of Hradec Králové is located at the junction of the Orlice and Elbe Rivers in the Východočeský region of the northern central Czech Republic. It is the regional capital, and has benefited throughout its history from its strategic position at the intersection of old trade routes from the Baltic Sea to the Danube and from Prague to Kraków, Poland. Given official town status in 1225, it underwent fortification the 14th century. Queen Elisabeth of Poland built the Cathedral of the Holy Ghost there in 1307. The town was heavily damaged in the 17th century during the Thirty Years' War. It is well known for the making of musical instruments. The 2003 estimated population was 97,500.
