Note: A former fortified town, Riom was in medieval times a pilgrimage site, housing relics of the saint Amable. Under the rule of the Duc de Berry in the 14thcentury, it reverted to the French crown in 1531, after which it flourished as a royal judicial center. After the revolution it continued to be a judicial seat. It torn down its city walls in the 18th century. Site of many historic structures and inscriptions, in 1985 it was given the status of "Ville d'Art et d'Histoire." Its population is 19, 324 by a 2003 estimate.
