Note: Located on the River Nene. Danes lived here from the 9th to the 11th century. 11th-century Norman castle here was the site of parliamentary meetings from the 12th to the 14th century. There are also Norman churches and a medieval marketplace. Northampton was the scene of the trial of Thomas Becket in 1164 and also where Henry VI was defeated during the War of the Roses in 1460. It was destroyed by fire 1675 and rebuilt in the 18th century. Northampton was noted for its boot and shoe manufacturing.
