Note: Located near the River Don. Center for famous cutlery since the 14th century; the Cutlers' Company was founded here in 1624. Metallurgical innovations by Henry Bessemer in the 19th century made the town famous for steel; the first Bessemer steel works was built here in 1859. Food-processing and clothing also important industries. The University of Sheffield is known for programs in metallurgy. There is an historic hillfort at nearby Wincobank.
