Note: Located near the River Don. Center for famous cutlery since the 14th century; the Cutlers' Company was founded here in 1624. Metallurgical innovations by Henry Bessemer in the 19th century made the town famous for steel; the first Bessemer steel works was built here in 1859. Food-processing and clothing also important industries. The University of Sheffield is known for programs in metallurgy. There is an historic hillfort at nearby Wincobank. Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned at Sheffield Manor.
