Note: Peninsula in N Black Sea SW of Sea of Azov. Archaeological evidence of human settlement in Crimea dates back to the Middle Paleolithic; Neanderthal remains found at Kiyik-Koba Cave have been dated to about 80,000 before present. Was original home of Cimmerian Tauri people who founded Greek-influenced Cimmerian Bosporus kingdom here in 5th cen. BCE; colonized by Dorian & Ionian Greeks in 6th cen. BCE; annexed by Catherine the Great 1783.
