Note: Nájera was one of the pilgrimage sites on route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, home of the shrine dedicated to Saint James, the patron saint of Spain. The symbol of Saint James, the scalloped shell, became the primary symbol representing pilgrims. Various pilgrimage routes in the autonomous communities of Aragon, Navarre, and León correspond to old Roman roads built in the northern portion of the Iberian Peninsula. Archaeological studies imply that Nájera was once an Ancient Roman site. Arabs occupied the the site around the 9th century, naming it Nájera, meaning "place between the rocks." Nájera is the historic capital of the Rioja region and was once the capital of Navarre. Historic sites in Nájera include the Abbey-Church, Monastery and Hospice of Santa María la Real as well as the Church of San Jaime, the Church of San Miguel, and the remains of the Church of Santiago.
