Note: Santo Domingo de la Calzada was one of the pilgrimage sites on route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, home of the shrine dedicated to Saint James, the patron saint of Spain. The symbol of Saint James, the scalloped shell, became the primary symbol representing pilgrims. Most construction of pilgrimage routes in Spain began by the end of the 10th century. Located in Santo Domingo de la Calzada is an 11th-century bridge and the 12th-century Cathedral of Santo Domingo de la Calzada.
