Note: The town of Sorø is the county seat of Vestsjælland in Denmark. Although not chartered as a town until 1638, it was the site of a 12th-century Cistercian abbey, which in 1586 was changed into a boys' school by Frederick II. This famous school, Sorø Academy, educated many Danish kings and princes over the centuries. The town's historic architecture features the former abbey church. Built by Bishop Absolon in the 12th century and which contains his tomb as well as those of two 14-century kings. The economic activities of the modern town consist mainly of meat processing, wood, and machinery. The 2004 estimated population was 7,000.
