Note: County Wicklow in Leinster province, Ireland, comprises 782 square miles of mostly wild and inaccessible terrain, and was traditionally a haven for fugitives. The clans of MacMurrough, O'Byrne, and O'Toole raided the Wicklow land held by the English until 1601. The main economic activity is agriculture, producing primarily cattle, potatoes, wheat, and oats. Some mining of pyrites and copper has been done at the town of Avoca since the 1940s. The 2003 estimated population was 116,800. |
