Note: Small village in western Poland which was a location for a Nazi concentration camp, known as Gross-Rosen. The camp was established in 1940. By 1945, many subcamps had been built and the entire system held over 76,000 prisoners, including around 26,000 women, the majority of them Jews. Upon the approach of the Soviets in early 1945, the camp was evacuated and 40,000 prisoners were sent on a "death march." Survivors of the march were sent to other concentration camps. Approximately 40,000 prisoners died, or were killed, at Gross-Rosen, during its existence. A memorial and museum now exist on the original site. |
