Note: Barbadelo was one the the pilgrimage sites on route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, home of the shrine dedicated to Saint James, the patron saint of Spain. The symbol of Saint James, the scalloped shell, became the normal badge representing pilgrims. Most construction of pilgrimage routes in Spain began by the end of the 10th century. The Parish Church of Santiago, formerly the Double Monastery and Convent of Santiago located in Barbadelo functioned as a pilgrim rest home. The church dates to the second half of the 12th century.
