Note: Area of Florence established under Cosimo de Medici in 1571 as a neighborhood for Jews. Within the ghetto, the Jews of Florence had a certain amount of legal and governmental autonomy. In 1799 the Jews of Florence were emancipated by Napoleonic forces who occupied the city.
