Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Fort McDowell Yavapai Nation, a federally-recognized Nation of the same name. The reservation spans 40 square-miles of land in Maricopa County, Arizona, which comprises only a small portion of the Yavapai peoples' ancestral territories (once 12 million acres in Arizona's Mogollon Rim country). Today, the reservation is one of the smallest in the state of Arizona. It is located 23 miles northeast of what is now Phoenix, Arizona; the Verde River flows north-south through the middle of the Reservation. It was first established by an Executive Order dated September 15, 1903, which converted the old Fort McDowell Military Reserve into a reservation for the Southeastern Yavapai who were forcibly relocated from their homelands via the Trail of Tears. Prior to its adapation as a Reservation, the Fort McDowell Military Reserve served as one of the most important outposts in the southwest during the 1865-1891 Apache Wars. More recently, tribal members were able to reaffirm rights to their Reservation lands by both successfully halting the construction of the Orme Dam in the late 1970s-early 1980s and securing a gaming compact in 1992. |
