Note: Located in the Gila National Forest near the headwaters of the Gila River. The name "Gila" is derived from the Yuma Indian term hahquahssael, meaning "salty water running." Site of ruins of ancient cliff-dwelling peoples; located 150 feet up in sheer walls of small canyon; Mongollon culture was in area by 200 CE; a later culture flourished here 8th-12th cen., farming rich bottomlands; disrupted by arrival of Paiute ca. 1300.
