Note: Sarria is one of the pilgrimage sites on route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, home of the shrine dedicated to Saint James, the patron saint of Spain. The symbol of Saint James, the scalloped shell, became the normal badge representing pilgrims. Most construction of pilgrimage routes in Spain began by the end of the 10th century. The town of Sarria existed with its present name as early as the mid-6th century. Historic sites in Sarria include the Galician Romanesque Parish Church of San Salvador, the Church of Santa Marina, castle remain on the hill in the old part of town, typical of Galician landscapes.
