Note: Andijon lies in eastern Uzbekistan in the Fergana Valley. The city dates from the 9th century, where it was located on the Silk Road trade route to China. It became a capital of the Fergana Valley in the 15th century, and later became part of the khanate of Kokand. In 1876, the city was captured by the Russians, although locals attempted a rebellion against Russian rule in 1898. Major industries in Andijon include textiles and food-processing. Petroleum production is also prevalent in the region.
