Note: Small village six miles south/southeast of Shrewsbury. The ancient Roman city of Viriconium is down the road from Pitchford. Pitchford Hall (ca. 1560-1570) is here, a Tudor hall and estate featuring an orangery, Roman remains, and a 17th-century tree house. It was built by William Ottley, the sheriff of Shropshire; the hall probably has a 14th- or 15th-century core within the current structure. It is named after a natural pitch well, about 250 yards northeast of the hall. During the Civil War Prince Rupert, nephew of Charles I, and his bodyguard hid here from Roundheads. The ancient Roman Watling Street runs through the estate.
