Hierarchy of Piltdown (archaeological site)  Piltdown (archaeological site)

Note: Located near Lewes. It was the site of the discovery of fossilized bone fragments in 1908, which were at the time believed to be the remains of an early Pleistocene man. He was known as "Piltdown man." The remains were sufficiently convincing to generate a scholarly controversy lasting more than 40 years, making it one of the most successful hoaxes in the history of science.
