Note: Area of northwestern Europe contained in modern Belgium, the Netherlands, Luxembourg, Alsace-Lorraine (France), and northwestern Germany. The kingdom was established when the Carolingian empire split; it was divided into two duchies in 959. It was ruled by a ducal family from the 11th century.
