Note: Chichen Itza is an ancient Maya site in Mexico with hieroglyphic inscriptions. Formerly believed to be Tampu Tocco; probably founded by Mayan peoples of Yucatán peninsula in 6th century; site of only water source (wells) in the area; invaded in 10th century, possibly by Itzá (alternatively, Itzá may have arrived in 13th century).
