Note: Mulhouse is an industrial city located on the plain of Alsace between the Jura and the Vosges Mountains, situated on the Ill River and on the Canal du Rhône au Rhin. It History first mentions it in the ninth century, and it became a free imperial city in 1308. It allied itself with the Swiss in the 16th century, joined the French Republic 1798; was taken by Germany 1871, and was restored to France in 1918. It was the founding place of a model workingmen's colony in 1853. Its notable architecture includes a 16th-century town hall, a 19th-century Protestant church that has original 14th century stained glass windows, and the restored 13th-century St. John Chapel. Its commercial products include organic chemicals, pharmaceuticals, machine tools, and electrical apparatus.
