Note: City, provincial center, and port located on the Amu Darya river in northern Turkmenistan. Was once known as Amul, and was an important Silk Road stop. Was sacked by the Mongols in the early 13th century, then later the Khanate of Khiva and the Emirate of Bukhara. The city emerged in the late 19th century as a military settlement along the Transcaspian Railway. Chardzhou's industries include cotton, silk, and furs.
