Note: Noted for battle during Wars of the Roses in which nobles loyal to Edward IV were defeated by rebel forces under Robin of Redesdale in 1469. There are many 16th- and 17th-century houses here. The town is famous for its ale, cakes since 1608, and the church of Banbury Cross, destroyed by Puritans in 1602 and rebuilt in 1859.
