Note: One of three original Christian centers in county; Site of a monastery (founded in 660) and a cathedral dating to the 12th-15th-centuries; the noteworthy Saxon crypt (670) features a narrow pasage called St. Wilfrid's Needle, the ability to pass through it being a sign of chastity. Thirteenth-century Wakeman's House is here; Wakeman's Horn still blows at 9 pm. Treaty signed here in 1640 ended the Second Bishop's War.
