Note: Pamplona was one of the pilgrimage sites on route to the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, home of the shrine dedicated to Saint James, the patron saint of Spain. The symbol of Saint James, the scalloped shell, became the primary symbol representing pilgrims. Various pilgrimage routes in the autonomous communities of Aragon, Navarre, and León correspond to old Roman roads built in the northern portion of the Iberian Peninsula. It became the strongest fortified town of northern Spain after Philip II of Spain constructed the citadel of 1571. Pamplona is famous for the running of the bulls in the city streets during the Fiesta de San Fermín. Pamplona is located in an irrigated region that produces cereal and manufactures chemicals, liquor, and paper. Historic sites in Pamplona include the Catheral of Santa María, the Church of San Cernín, the parish Church of San Nicolás, and Hospital of San Miguel. |
