Note: The city of Neustadt an der Weinstrasse is located on the eastern slopes of the Haardt mountains at the mouth of the Speyer-Bach. It was founded in 1220 and chartered in 1275. It retains several historic structures, including the Casimirianum, the seat of Heidelberg University from 1578-1583, now used as a convention hall, the town hall that was once a Jesuit College, and the Collegiate Church dating from the 14th century. It was damaged in the Thirty Years' War, and held by France in the1690s and the 1790s. It was damaged heavily in World War II but has been rebuilt. The modern city is the capital of the Rheinhesse-Pfalz district, and in the center of the famous German Weinstrasse, or Wine Route. It hosts the annual German wine festival, and is a center for the study of viticulture. Local industries include the production of paper and metal products, and tourism is a major economic mainstay. The 2005 population was calculated at 54,080. |
