Note: On the site of the ancient city of Bactra, which gave its name to the Greek province of Bactria. It is the first known city to which the Indo-Iranian tribes moved from the north of Amu Darya, ca. 2000/1500 BCE. It was on the route of Alexander the Great and the ancient Silk Road; once a center of Zoroastrianism and an early bishopric. It was twice destroyed: by Genghis Khan (12th century) and Tamerlane (13th century). The site is now a village, having been reduced by the movement of the capital after a cholera epidemic in 1911.
