Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, one of six Ojibwe members of the larger Minnesota Chippewa Tribe. The reservation spans approximately 100,000 acres adjacent to the city of Cloquet in Carlton, Douglas, and St. Louis Counties, Minnesota. It is comprised of three districts: Bapashkominitigong (Cloquet), Gwaaba'iganing (Sawyer), and Ashkibwaakaaning (Brookston). The reservation was established through a series of treaties beginning in 1825, cultiminating with the LaPointe Treaty of September 24, 1854. The LaPointe Treaty forced the Fond du Lac Band to cede a large portion of their traditional lands in Northern Minnesota, Northern Wisconsin, and the Western Upper Peninsula of Michigan in exchange for the establishment of its current reservation. |
