Note: This is a federally-recognized reservation stewarded by the Mohave, Chemehuevi, Hopi, and Navajo peoples comprising the Colorado River Indian Tribes (CRIT). The reservation spans almost 300,000 acres along the Colorado River, including lands in both Arizona and California. In addition to the reservation's primary community, Parker, Arizona, it is also home to several smaller communities located on a combination of Tribal, leased, and non-Native lands. One such community, Poston, Arizona, was the site of one of the United States' largest Japanese incarceration camps during WWII; an associated monument and museum exist on reservation lands and are maintained by the CRIT. The reservation was originally established in 1865 when the federal government allocated lands for the Mohave and Chemehuevi peoples who had inhabited the area for centuries. People of the Hopi and Navajo were relocated to the Reservation in 1945. |
