Note: Early inhabitants of the area were prehistoric hunters; 16th-cen. Spanish reported Atakapa Indians, Ais Indians, Biloxi, & tribes of Caddo confederacy living or hunting in the region; first Europeans in area were Spanish, followed by French & English; John Bevil of New York founded the first permanent, non-Native American settlements in 1820s.
