Note: Islip straddles a hill undercut by the River Ray, shortly before it flows into the River Cherwell. The village was once a place of noteworthy strategic importance because during floodtime, and with Oxford held by an enemy, Islip Bridge lay on the only dry route between the north and south. Site of a fierce Saxon battle and birthplace of Edward the Confessor.
